Correct Your Vision

Lasik eye surgery is a form of refractive surgery which is the term that is used to describe a surgical procedure which corrects eye conditions such as near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism.

While there is always a risk that damage may occur – as with any type of surgery – the results overall are excellent.

Immediate Effects

The procedure is actually very quick, the treatment for each eye taking no more than a few minutes, while the actual surgical process takes only about a minute.

Lasik (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis) eye surgery involves reshaping the cornea in order to allow the light entering the eye to be correctly focused on the retina.

Quick Recovery

In the majority of cases Lasik surgery is pain-free and while there may be some short-term blurring, improved vision is usually achieved within 24 hours or less. While you cannot drive home after Lasik surgery you should be able to drive the following day. Your eye surgeon will make an appointment to see you on the next day when he can confirm that you are safe to drive.

Throw Away Those Reading Glasses For Good!

Your eye surgeon will use either a femtosecond laser or a microkeratome which will create a very thin circular flap in the cornea. This hinged flap is then folded back so that the underlying cornea can be accessed. Then using an excimer laser the surgeon will remove minute amounts of the underlying cornea (the stroma) which will reshape the cornea into the desired position. The object for nearsighted patients is to flatten the cornea, whereas for farsighted patients it is to make the cornea steeper.

The excimer laser produces a cool ultraviolet light beam to remove the tiny amounts of tissue from the eye, and only topical anaesthetic drops are needed.

When the laser has reshaped the cornea, the flap is replaced back over the area and the corneal tissue will heal naturally. There are no stitches or bandages required.

Lasik eye surgery can also be used to correct astigmatism by reshaping an irregular cornea into a normal shape.

What Is The Laser Eye Correction Procedure?

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for Lasik eye surgery, and there are other procedures which may be more appropriate that your eye surgeon will recommend if this is the case.

Your eye surgeon will give you a thorough examination to ensure that your eyes are healthy enough for the procedure, and he or she will check the thickness and shape of the cornea. Pupil size and any refractive irregularities such as myopia, astigmatism, or hyperopia will be taken into account. The moisture content of your eyes will also be checked and a precautionary treatment to avoid dry eye syndrome after the Lasik surgery may be recommended. If you currently wear contact lenses you will be asked to stop doing so for a couple of weeks before surgery since they can affect the natural shape of your cornea.

An automatic machine called a corneal topographer will be used to measure the curvature of the cornea and create a “map” of it, and you may also have a wavefront analysis which involves light waves going into the eye to check the problems with your vision with extreme accuracy.

What Is The Cost Of Lasik Eye Surgery?

Laser surgery cost can vary quite considerable from one surgeon to another, but an average figure would be around $2,750 for each eye. You may be able to get Lasik surgery for as little as $1,950 per eye, and a very small percentage of eye surgeons might charge as much as $3,750.

If you choose bladeless Lasik where the corneal flap is created with a femtosecond laser, or a procedure using wavefront technology, expect to pay a couple of hundred dollars more than average for each eye. When the Lasik procedure is completed, your surgeon will ask you to rest for a short while before you are driven home.

While you may have some blurred vision immediately after the surgery this should have cleared up by the next morning. Your vision should stabilise and continue to improve over the next few days. In the vast majority of people the vision is improved immediately, although in rare cases it can take a few weeks.

Many people are able to go back to work the following day, but your surgeon might suggest a couple of days off while resting. You should refrain from rubbing your eyes as it could possibly disturb the flap before it has fully healed. You should also avoid undertaking any sport for a week or more since it can affect the healing process.

How Long Does Lasik Eye Surgery Last?

The majority of people achieve 20/20 vision after Lasik surgery which sounds as though it is the best vision you can have, but the fact is that some people naturally have 20/15 vision or even 20/10 vision which is actually “better” than 20/20.

A very small number of patients may need a “touch up” procedure a few months after treatment, but Lasik eye surgery is not likely to last for a lifetime because the eye changes as we age, so you might need glasses for reading as you get older. Overall, Lasik surgery has a very high rate of success.

Before the Lasik eye surgery procedure is carried out you will have some drops put in your eyes in order to numb them and avoid any discomfort. Your eye surgeon may also give you a light intravenous medication to relax you.

You are then placed with your eye under the laser and a lid speculum is used to keep your eyelids open and prevent blinking. An ink marker is then used to mark the cornea and a suction ring is used to prevent any eye movements that could affect the position of the flap. When the flap has been created the surgeon will use a computer to set the excimer laser to the correct position to adjust your cornea as required.

You will be required to look at a light while the surgeon watches your eye through a microscope as the laser carries out the procedure. You may feel some pressure on your eye as the laser beam works, and there will also be a clicking sound, but you should feel no pain. When the work on the first eye is completed, the surgery on the other eye will take place immediately. It only takes around five minutes in total to operate on each eye.

“I had my LASIK 10 days ago and I felt like I did 10 years ago when I didn’t have to wear glasses. Dr. Sheth is very professional and I felt completely safe and comfortable leaving my vision in his hands.

The surgery was quick and painless. The next day I felt like I never had surgery and couldn’t believe that I can see so good. My eyes felt completely normal with no discomfort at all and no dry eyes. However, the eye drops are very important and I am following the schedule.

Everybody at Sheth-Horsley Eye Center is very professional and everyone is very nice and friendly. The waiting room is very welcoming as well!

Thank you Dr. Sheth and staff for giving me my vision back!”

“This is long overdue but I have been wanting to share how much I love the LASIK surgery that I had done last fall.

I have been wearing glasses forever since I was 12 years old. I had a hard time with contacts.

I never thought I was a candidate for the surgery as I had a stigmatism. But Dr. Sheth told me differently.

The surgery was easy and quick and so was the recovery.

I feel like a new person and love that I don’t need any glasses or contacts.

It is complete freedom.

Thanks for all and the staff at Sheth-Horsley is wonderful and professional.

Best,
Joanne”
